Welcome

Monday, March 18th, 2002

Yesterday, both here and at CommUnity of Minds, my focus was on our present human crisis. This morning, I would like you to think about the following  statements.

“We have met the enemy and he is us.” —Pogo

“We are the people we have been waiting for.” —Hopi Elders

Both statements are true.

The first statement assigns humanity the responsibility for our present Fossil Fuel Depletion-Overpopulation-Ecological Destruction Crisis. This assignment of responsibility is true. It really is our fault.

“We have met the enemy and he is us.”

But so far most of us continue to ignore the crisis. For as Sophocles taught us “Ignorance provides the happiest life”. A few have noticed the crisis. They are making a lot of noise, but not many are listening. As Arthur Coulter and Jivan Vatanya have explained, we are in a trance. The question of importance here is: Will we wake up in time to save ourselves?

Because  you see, the second statement is also true. There is no body coming to rescue us.

“We are the people we have been waiting for.”

Thanks to Brent N. Hunter for the quote by the Hopi Elders.
